PROCESS DESCRIPTION

Gas is transported from production and storage facilities to the rest of the country through a network of transmission pipelines. Compression is used as the method of physically moving the gas from one point to the next. The compressors are located approximately every 50 to 100 miles along the pipeline in Compressor Stations. These stations are mainly composed of compressors along with their drivers and support equipment such as filters, separators, coalescers, etc.

 

PROCESS PROBLEMS

  • Pipeline contaminant fouls compressors.
  • Excessive Glycol make-up or slow solvent flowrates.
  • Contaminant in the lube oil leads to excessive maintenance and engine and compressor overhauls.
  • Contaminant in the coolant leads to excessive make-up costs, disposal costs, pump seal wear, and inefficient engine/compressor operation.
  • Contaminant in the fuel leads to inefficient engine operation.
  • Oil carry over from compression clogs down stream pipeline or storage formation.

 

PECO SOLUTIONS

Scale, rust, condensed hyrdrocarbon liquids, and water are just some of the contaminants commonly found in gas pipelines. All of these are removed with a PECO PEACH Gemini Pura Sep with PEACH PCHG elements. If a heavy volume of liquids are present, the addition of a Series 95 ahead of the Gemini will remove them. Storage contaminants such as moisture, salts, and dirt windup in the gas Dehydration system. If unchecked, dirt and salts build up in the glycol reducing its effectiveness in performing the function for which it was designed which is moisture removal. By utilizing a PECO Series 55 with PEACH P-90 elements you can keep the glycol clean.

Lube oil contamination can come in many forms. Coolant leaks, various wear particles, and carbonization are all found in lube oil systems. These contaminants will cause accelerated wear form any major engine components, thus leading to increased maintenance costs. A PECO Series RFF Filter with PEACH P90 or PP Pleated Style elements will remove all of the common forms of contamination.

Coolant contamination is one of the most over looked problems at a compressor station. Engine and compressor coolant play a vital role in the efficient operation of both pieces of equipment. Oil leaks and wear particles in coolant can lead to poor heat exchange capability, greater use of make-up coolant and increased pump seal wear. An installation of a PECO PVB Series housing with PEACH P90 or PS Pleated Synthetic elements can solve these problems. Natural gas used to fuel the engines should be filtered using a PECO Series 85 with PEACH PCHG filter coalescer elements. The Series 85 will remove contaminants such as moisture, pipe scale and rust commonly found in fuel gas. Poor gas quality leads to inefficient engine performance which can be an economic drain for the station.

The other component for the engine fuel is air. Ambient air is mixed with the natural gas to fuel the engine. This air must be filtered to remove dust, dirt, and other contaminants found in air. PECO provides replacement filters to fit air intake equipment made by many Original Equipment Manufacturers. These filters meet OEM specifications. Gas leaving the compressor station is typically bound for re-entry in to the pipeline or into gas storage formations. Oil carry over from the compressor can cause problems for the next facility along the pipeline. It can, also, lead to premature plugging of the storage formation. Installing a PECO PEACH Gemini PuraSep down stream of the compressor will catch any entrained carry-over.
